TCC: (Brown Bag Lunch and Learn Series) Building Community in (STEM) classrooms

The Teaching and Creativity Center will host a brown bag series on diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and learning. The purpose of the brown bag lunch and learn series is for faculty members and staff to get connected, share their experiences and learn pedagogical strategies in the field of diversity, equity and inclusion. Each session will begin with a short presentation on the topic of the session, followed by a discussion which attendees can share their opinions. The series will provide a learning space for faculty members and staff to exchange ideas and share resources on diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and learning.

Building Community in (STEM) classrooms:  

  • Speaker: Benjamin Schermerhorn (Engineering Science and Physics)

What are things we do in the classroom that make students feel like they belong and want to be there? How do we welcome them and foster community in the classroom? In this session, our presenter will share ideas on how to build community in class and create an inclusive environment in the first week of class, as well as in office hours, in the context of STEM. Attendees will have the opportunity to exchange ideas on building community in classrooms. The session is open to all disciplines (STEM is not required).
