Build Sustainability into Your Life - Household Cleaning products

Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on a home cleaning product? Often, there may be ingredients you do not recognize, and some can contain toxic heavy metals and designer chemicals. We sometimes forget that natural substances familiar to us in our daily lives often have great cleaning properties. Natural, organic products can be healthier for us and our environment.

  • Check out the NYS Use Less-Toxic Products page for ways to use items like baking soda, salt, and vinegar to do tasks like unclog sinks, whiten laundry, clean windows, polish items and do more without harsh chemicals.
  • Select Safer Choice products that are certified by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as part of a pollution prevention program that includes practices that reduce, eliminate, or prevent pollution at its source such as using safer ingredients in products.
  • Remember to always dispose of oil-based paints, pesticides, automotive fluids, home chemicals, compact fluorescent bulbs and other household hazardous wastes properly. In Monroe County, residents can take many items to Ecopark. Check the “How do I Recycle/Dispose of … ?” Search for detailed information.
