Please help raise awareness of the sacrifice of service made by our Vveterans by wearing a poppy this weekend. Poppies, handmade by disabled Veterans in Bath N.Y. are available at DCC Suite 5032, or at the Campus Events Office at the Brighton Campus, Room 3-120 (see Julianna Frisch).
The American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program raises community awareness and respect for our Veterans by educating the public about the symbol of the poppy, taken from a line in the poem “In Flanders Fields” written on the battlefront during World War I by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D.
In Flanders Fields:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
–Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D.
