MCC Daily Tribune

Annual Fall Cyber Security Awareness Training Begins

As you know from VP Simmons' October 10 Daily Tribune article, we recently ran a simulated phishing email security test to measure what our vulnerability would be if a real phishing attack were to happen to our users. The percentage of our users who fell for this attack was 8%.

Cybercrime is getting more serious by the day. Hackers are getting smarter about tricking people into clicking on fraudulent links or opening malicious attachments in emails. It can happen to anyone. It CAN happen to you. It can even happen on your own computer and personal email.

Because of this, it is very important that everyone continues to get security awareness training. We need to defend MCC against cybercrime, and security is everyone's job. You are the last line of defense in keeping our college's information safe.

Workforce cyber security training is required as part of a compliant information security program by the New York State SHIELD (Stop Hacks and Improve ELectronic Data) Security Act, which was signed into law on July 25, 2019.

In recognition of the fact that 95% of our users have successfully completed their FY19 training, we are continuing the process with a brief 15 minute Cyber Security Awareness refresher training. This refresher will help you learn how to avoid falling victim to phishing emails. After that, the frequency of your training will be determined by whether or not you click on test phishing emails. You can minimize the training you need to take by being alert and not falling for these phishing emails.

Please be on the lookout for an email from the KnowBe4 system to invite you to take this required refresher course. (The from address will be: KnowBe4 on behalf of Monroe Community College SUNY.)

We will send out simulated phishing tests regularly so you can practice the skills you will learn. Remember, the safest action you can take when you receive a phishing email is to just delete it!
