Paul Bishop is co-author of a paper validating the use of a telephone triage system to send ambulances to emergency calls without using lights and sirens. The paper "Validation of Using EMD Dispatch Codes to Identify Low-Acuity Patients" was published in the January edition of Prehospital Emergency Care and was based on information from the local emergency medical services system. The paper demonstrated that telephone information can be used to accurately identify a group of patients that do not need an emergency response. This allows ambulances to reduce the number of lights and sirens responses thereby reducing the likelihood of ambulance accidents while ensuring a prompt response for patients with an urgent need.
