David Shaw, assistant professor, VaPA, received a doctorate in music theory, composition, and history from the University of Northern Colorado. The school only granted five doctorates in music this year.
Shaw's 350-page dissertation included a biography of the composer Peter Mennin, an in-depth analysis of his Fifth Symphony, and the composition and analysis of an original symphony. Shaw's symphony, for an orchestra of about 90 performers, contains 850 measures and over 40,000 notes.
