Important Updates to Labor-Management Guidance on Progressive Discipline

The Labor-Management Committee has recently updated the Faculty Association’s Labor-Management Guidance on Progressive Discipline document.  These revisions should help provide greater clarity and consistency in handling performance concerns and reinforcement of workplace expectations. These updates are designed to support both supervisors and employees in navigating constructive conversations to promote sustainable performance improvements.

Guidance Updates:

Differentiation Between Counseling & Discipline:

  • Counseling memos remain non-disciplinary and serve as documented coaching to help employees improve their performance and/or compliance to MCC Core Values and Behaviors before formal discipline is considered.  Counseling memos are not to be included within the employee’s personnel file.
  • Formal letters of discipline, including Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs), are updated to be defined as disciplinary measures that require Human Resources involvement as well as placement within the employee’s personnel file after they are presented to the employee.

Guidance on Supervisor Record-Keeping:

  • Supervisors are responsible for maintaining confidential files that reflect coaching logs and counseling memos and must ensure official disciplinary records are placed within the employee’s personnel file, as is outlined within the Faculty Association’s (FA) collective bargaining agreement.

Where to Find the Updated Guidance:

The revised guidance is now available on the myMCC Portal. You can access this by navigating to:

  • myMCC > Employee Home > Online Forms > Human Resources, and then select “Labor-Management Progressive Discipline Guidance”
  • Or view the Labor-Management Guidance on Progressive Discipline PDF in its entirety by using the link below (must login using MCC credentials).

By reinforcing these principles, MCC aims to ensure a fair, transparent, and supportive process for employees while maintaining operational excellence.

For additional details, please refer to the full Labor-Management Guidance on Progressive Discipline document on myMCC or contact the FA Union Leader or Human Resources with any questions.

Thank you for your commitment to fostering a respectful and productive workplace!
