Need to Know: Tutoring Enhancements

Services formerly provided by the Academic Foundations Learning Center, Writing Center, and Center for Academic Reading (CAR) have been consolidated and relocated to one convenient location now known as the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC). The recent implementation of the TAAC has provided Monroe Community College with an opportunity to serve students in an efficient manner.

The TAAC fosters an academic environment that is accessible and equitable to all students enrolled at MCC. The TAAC aims to assist students with becoming independent learners, promoting critical thinking, and providing support from trained professionals. Students can utilize the TAAC to get assistance with coursework, improve study skills, and prepare for exams. Students can work with tutoring staff to assess their academic needs and develop interventions for tackling challenges in particular courses.

The TAAC provides services at the Brighton and Downtown Campuses and the Applied Technologies Center. TAAC staff including academic coaches, peer & professional tutors, and writing consultants work with students on a walk-in or appointment basis. The hours of operation for the TAAC at the Brighton Campus mirror Fall 2017 hours; however, for the Downtown Campus, TAAC is open an hour earlier during the week and stays open up to three hours later than past semesters. During the Fall 2018 semester, the TAAC saw an increase in tutoring hours by about 50 percent (5,552 in the Fall 2017 versus 8,356 in the Fall 2018). Additionally, the number of individual tutoring sessions went up by about 25 percent (10,142 in Fall 2017 versus 12,276 in Fall 2018).

Please keep in mind that prior to the fall 2018 semester the centers experienced issues in recording accurate data. These issues stem from using multiple instruments to gather data including student swipe system, tutoring logs, and the Access database. We are currently in the process of implementing a more accurate data tracking system via Starfish.
