2025 Commencement Keynote Speaker Announced
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Melany J. Silas-Chandler, a long-time MCC professor in the Health Studies Program, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s commencement. Dr. Silas-Chandler has served as the Chair of the African American Affinity Group for the past several years and has served over the course of her tenure on the Diversity Council, and the Wellness Council. Dr. Silas-Chandler has also served on numerous administrative and departmental hiring committees, along with Middle States, SUNY, and MCC Assessment committees. With more than 25 years of impactful service as an educator in the Rochester community, she has partnered with diverse stakeholders as a program developer, community consultant, conference organizer, minister, and counselor educator.
Dr. Silas-Chandler earned her Bachelor of Arts in Health and Society and a Master of Science in Counseling and Human Development from the University of Rochester. She also has a Master of Divinity from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. Dr. Silas-Chandler earned her PhD in Counseling and Counselor Education at Syracuse University. Her area of study was the mental health help-seeking and self-care strategies of Black women.
In addition to being an educator, Dr. Silas-Chandler is also a minister, author, playwright, and motivational speaker. She is the Founder and CEO of MJS Productions, LLC, a production company she began in 2010. Dr. Silas-Chandler has written, directed, produced, and served as a songwriter for numerous productions and events.
Melany is an active member of professional organizations, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the American Counseling Association, and the National Association of Black Counselors. Various magazines and newspapers, including the Democrat and Chronicle, About Time, and Open Mic Magazines, have recognized her career accomplishments and volunteer activities.
