COVID-19 Reminders: Vaccination and Booster Help Limit Infection, Severe Illness

The arrival of COVID-19 variants in New York and Monroe County has led to a recent increase in new cases. Please stay vigilant to protect yourself and others from the virus.

In her March 30 update on New York’s progress combating COVID-19, Governor Kathy Hochul reinforced that, "… it is vitally important that every New Yorker continues using the tools we know are effective. If you're feeling sick, get tested and limit your exposure to others. If you test positive, talk to your doctor about available treatments. The vaccine and booster are still the most effective way to limit infection and severe illness, and I encourage all New Yorkers to take advantage of these tools so we can continue to keep ourselves and loved ones safe and healthy."

MCC administrators and staff are in constant contact with state and county health departments and follow the latest guidance with regards to COVID-19 mitigation efforts. MCC’s COVID-19 Tactical Workgroup and the testing notification team continue to meet weekly to keep the college community safe and informed.

Please keep in mind:

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

• The CDC also recommends that everyone who is eligible stay up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, including people with weakened immune systems.

• Masks can help protect you and others from COVID-19. 

  • Earlier this week, Monroe County leaders advised individuals who are at high risk of severe illness from COVID to wear a KN95 or N95 mask when in public spaces. 
  • Even if not required to do so, an individual’s decision to continue to wear a mask when inside buildings is a personal one that deserves respect. 
  • MCC provides access to masks, personal protective equipment and other accommodations. Individual faculty retain the right to ask, but not require, students to wear a mask in their classroom. Face coverings are available for use by the college community through Public Safety by contacting the Parking Services Office, room 1-102 (292-2700).

• Free COVID-19 testing is available weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays in MCC’s Flynn Campus Center Forum (3-130) for all who want to be tested. Testing services and home test kits are easily obtainable from your local pharmacy and local retailers. You can also access four free at-home COVID rapid antigen tests from the federal government at covidtests.gov.
