Preventing Identity Theft - What you can do

Signing-up for credit monitoring services can be an extremely beneficial step toward protecting your identity.

Credit monitoring can help prevent identity theft and eliminate inaccurate information from appearing on your credit report. Credit monitoring is a service that tracks your credit report on a daily basis and notifies you of any significant changes on your report, which can be caused by suspicious activity in the form of illegitimate credit requests, address changes, etc.

Historically, credit monitoring services can be expensive. Many charge $10-30 per month.

One free service - Credit Karma - offers credit monitoring for free and is powered by TransUnion, one of the three major credit report agencies. Credit Karma leverages an advertising model to pay for the credit monitoring service - consumers are never charged and no credit card is required.
