The Book Review of Michelle Alexander’s Book, “The New Jim Crow,” was a phenomenal success. The collaboration between the Rochester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Diversity Council of Monroe Community College pulled together a stellar panel and event. The panel included representatives of every level within the community concerning mass incarceration:
Honorable Lovely Warren, City of Rochester Mayor
Dr. Anne Kress, MCC President
Wayne Harris, Rochester Deputy Chief of Police
Stephen Miller, City Court Judge
Shani Curry-Mitchell, Assistant District Attorney
Van White, President, RCSD Board of Education
Ruth Turner, Director, RCSD Social Work and Counseling Services
Rev. Dr. Weldon Thomas, Pastor and Community Activist
The event created thoughtful dialogue amongst the panelist as well as the community participants. MCC Professor Karen Morris, Town Judge, was also able to add her thoughts and expertise to the conversation and Chief Diversity Chair, Lloyd Holmes, PhD and Diversity Council Co-Chairs Shelitha Williams and Craig Rand were also in attendance, along with Diversity Council Member Dean Kim McKinsey-Mabry. The event also received a review from the D & C: https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2014/10/28/mass-incarceration-rochester-panel-discussion/18094919/
