An Introduction to Mentors in Violence Prevention at MCC (MVP-MCC) on the Brighton Campus

As reports of sexual assault, bullying, harassment and other forms of violence fill our newsfeeds, Mentors in Violence Prevention at MCC (MVP-MCC) wants you to become an active bystander! MVP was founded by leading violence prevention educator, Dr. Jackson Katz, to inspire intervention when we witness potential and/or actual violence. Katz has been a guest scholar at MCC on numerous occasions, and is best known for the documentary, Tough Guise (1999). His next film, The Bystander Moment, is to be released next month and will highlight MVP's groundbreaking work. To view trailer: https://www.mediaed.org/the-right-video-at-the-right-time/

Launched in 2010 by Professor Joe Sturnick, Law & Criminal Justice, and me, MVP-MCC offers bystander intervention trainings, curriculum infusion into select courses, co- and extra-curricular programming, an annual MVP in Action scholarship funded by The MCC Foundation, community collaborations, and certified facilitators to work with your group or department. Additional information is included in our attached Information Sheet.

We are offering a timely and necessary professional development program for MCC employees only; MVP 101: An Introduction to MVP-MCC on Friday, November 30, 2018 from 9:00am-12:00pm on the Brighton Campus (room TBD) and we invite administrators, faculty and staff to participate. MVP 101 features modules on the extent and prevention of violence by engaging participants in intervention techniques and candid discussions. Participants will obtain leadership tools with which to challenge sexism, racism, homophobia and other abuses of power. We will also have a sign-up sheet for our spring certification training to be held in March 2019. Given the sensitivity of the curriculum, there will be counselors available.

We expect seats to fill fast, so, if interested, please email me at cplumeri@monroecc.edu and/or call 685-6185? Our longitudinal assessments confirm that we do transformative work and we hope that you will join us!
