Foundation for Student Success (FSS) Webinar - Strategies for Engaging Leaders

Founded in 2016 and housed at the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS) in Colorado, the Foundation for Students Success launched its first project by identifying a small group of community colleges and public universities whose student success rates were higher than their input variables would predict. These institutional leaders were interviewed and seven were selected as mentors. All mentor institutions have at least 25 percent American Indian, Black, and/or Latino students. These mentor institutions were then matched with three demographically similar mentee institutions in a large-scale effort to promote social mobility. This set of one mentor institution and three mentee institutions is referred to as a pod. There are 28 institutions participating.

NCHEMS staff has since facilitated and tracked interactions among the pods of institutions as they work together to reach their self-defined goals towards reducing their equity gaps and changing the culture of their campuses. The lessons being learned are being widely shared. FSS has published mentor case studies available at https://fssawards.org/case-studies/mentor-case-studies/ and is hosting the 2018 webinar series.

For the past year, MCC has engaged in this initiative through a mentoring relationship and site visits with San Jacinto College, TX, and participation in the two previous webinars.
