Coexist: The First Human Rights Film of the Spring 2019 series

The Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project (www.monroecc.edu/go/holocaust) invites you to the first installment of the Spring 2019 Human Rights Film Series: Coexist

"In the 53-minute documentary film, Coexist, Rwanda's unprecedented social experiment in government-mandated reconciliation is revealed for the first time through the eyes of a diverse range of survivors: victims, perpetrators, and those who bore witness to the 1994 genocide. What they share is breathtaking, heartbreaking, and inspired." (https://upstanderproject.org/coexist/)

Several guests will join the post-screening discussion to contribute their recollections of the genocide and the government-directed efforts at reconciliation. Rochester residents Marcel Mutsindashyaka and Eliane Mukayisenga were children during the genocide and remember well the challenges and successes of the subsequent reconciliation efforts. MCC student Emable Butebitsi grew up in post-genocide Rwanda and particularly recalls the reconciliation efforts emphasized during his primary school education.

The 2019 film series highlights current Restorative Practices and Reconciliation Efforts taking place at national, state, and community levels. Each documentary covers the practical challenges, moral quandaries, and incremental successes of these efforts. Discussion will be facilitated by MCC faculty and students as well as community members. These guests will lend their experience, expertise, and valuable perspectives to the discussion.

The HGHRP's 2019 Human Rights Film Series is designed to complement academic and co-curricular, HGHRP-hosted events held during the Spring 2019 semester in order to build awareness of human rights issues."

Each documentary is free, open to the public, and scheduled for both campuses. Light refreshments provided.

Brighton Screening: Tuesday, February 12th, 5:30 pm, Forum, 3-130

Downtown Campus Screening: Wednesday, February 13th, 2:30 pm, High Falls B
