Help Shape the Future of STEM: Join Our Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Initiative!

We invite STEM faculty to join us in making MCC a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Why take part?

If you're looking to create a more welcoming and accessible classroom, this is your chance to grow personally and professionally while helping make MCC a safer, more empowering space for everyone. Your voice matters — come collaborate with us and help lead the way in fufilling MCC's promise for all!

What do we do?

The STEM Faculty Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Work Group is already taking action, and we’d love for you to be part of it! Here are some of the activities we engage in:

  • Educate ourselves on DEI-related topics.
  • Discuss challenges in making STEM classrooms more inclusive and work together to develop solutions.
  • Share ideas and methods for making our courses universally welcoming and accessible to diverse student populations.
  • Evaluate our syllabi, assignments, and course materials to ensure they are inclusive and representative of diverse perspectives.
  • Facilitate professional development workshops on topics like implicit bias and microaggressions.
  • Discuss how to better support diverse student needs.

Why only STEM ?

STEM faculty often face similar challenges in terms of course structure, assessment methods, and teaching styles. While challenges related to diversity, equity, and inclusion are found in nearly every subject, STEM disciplines face large divides in the representation of women and minorities, bias in STEM curricula, and unique barriers to accessibility in our courses.

When do we meet?

This semester, we will be meeting the second Friday each month from 3:00 to 4:00pm in room 3-118 or join virtually via Zoom. Our next meeting is Friday, February 14th.

Direct questions or inquires to Jason Szymanski (jszymanski@monroecc.edu).
