MCC Law and Criminal Justice Student Interns Participate in Public Safety Mock Crime Scene

On Thursday, March 31, 2022, current MCC Law and Criminal Justice students enrolled in MCC’s Department of Public Safety’s Internship Program participated in a mock crime scene at MCC’s Brighton Campus. The mock crime scene was designed by current Public Safety Technician/Guard Patricia Hunt and Guard Sarah DeLaus who also served as instructors throughout.

Guard Hunt is currently one of two Crime Scene Evidence Technicians within Monroe Community College’s Department of Public Safety and is assigned to the afternoon shift. She completed her New York State Crime Scene Evidence Technician Certification at Monroe Community College’s Public Safety Training Facility in 2016. Guard Hunt is also a certified New York State General Topics Instructor and currently teaches the New York State 8-hour annual Security Guard course to Public Safety personnel at the Public Safety Training Facility. Guard DeLaus completed Instructor Development School in September of 2021 at the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Center for Domestic Preparedness and currently guest lectures in College Orientation Seminar classes about MCC’s Department of Public Safety.

MCC Students spent the afternoon and early evening processing the mock crime scene. Students were able to apply what they have learned from their coursework throughout their time in the Law and Criminal Justice Program and in their internship. Students were also taught basic crime scene processing fundamentals to help guide them in the process. Students successfully marked, collected, and processed various types of evidence from the scene by doing the following:

  • Using critical thinking skills
  • Securing the scene
  • Note taking
  • Taking photographs with and without scale for the proper measurements of specific evidence
  • Dusting for fingerprints
  • DNA Extraction
  • Learning the proper way to collect evidence
  • Appropriate documentation
  • Chain of Custody

MCC Department of Public Safety thanks the interns who participated in the first mock crime scene and wishes them well in their future career endeavors. Thank you to Housing and Residence Life Director Jamia Danzy for allowing the use of a residence hall suite for the mock crime scene location.
