Important Notice from Public Safety: Motor Vehicle Thefts/Free Steering Wheel Locks Available

On 9/10/24, two motor vehicles were stolen, and three motor vehicles were broken into and had property removed, all at the Brighton Campus. The Brighton Police Department and the MCC Public Safety Department are investigating.

Nationwide and locally, a social media trend has resulted in an increase in motor vehicle thefts, mainly of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Some of these vehicles do not contain an internal immobilization device, resulting in criminals being able to steal the vehicle quickly without keys or key fobs by using a screwdriver and a USB cord. Immobilization devices, such as a steering wheel lock, may help deter the thefts.

MCC Public Safety and Parking Services have obtained a supply of these steering wheel locks from Hyundai Auto manufacturers. As supplies last, we will provide these locks to students and staff who drive Hyundai and Kia vehicles. There is no charge for these locks.

To obtain a steering wheel lock, contact Parking Services in person in Building 21-140, via phone (585-292-2700), or e-mail parkingrequests@monroecc.edu. Students and staff at the Downtown Campus can obtain a steering wheel lock at the front desk. When picking up the lock, bring a copy of your registration.

The MCC Public Safety Department suggests that owners of Hyundai or Kia vehicles contact their respective dealerships for information on anti-theft software upgrades that may prevent these thefts.

As always, we ask the MCC community to be on the lookout for suspicious activity, and notify Public Safety immediately at 585-292-2911 (or X2911 on an internal phone) if you suspect anything out of the ordinary. Please feel free to also reach out with any questions or concerns, and thank you for playing your role in keeping our campus community safe.
