Reading and Discussion Series: Gender and Identity Amidst Volatility and Difference in the Muslim World

The office of Global Education and International Services is pleased to present:

Reading and Discussion Series: Gender and Identity Amidst Volatility and Difference in the Muslim World.

Life in the Muslim world often comes to Western readers as a series of conflict, war, and extremism through the lens of Western media. Rarely do we get a glimpse of a singular story, an individual experiencing love, beauty, fear, or struggle in places like Baghdad, Tehran, Fez or even Brooklyn.

In this series, through a variety of genres, including memoir, short story, novel, and oral testimony, we will read stories of women who are both Muslim and non-Muslim living inside and outside of the geographic and religious Muslim world.  Professor Angelique Stevens will facilitate the discussions.

All are welcome to join!  The discussion groups will take place at Monroe Community College in the Brighton Room (Building 3, Room 217) from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  Copies of the books can be found in the MCC libraries and the Monroe County Public Library system.  The short stories by selected authors will be provided free of charge.

Dates, times, and topics are as follows:

1.       September 30, 2015:  Short stories: Selected authors

2.       November 4, 2015:   Fatima Mernissi. Dreams of Trespass

3.       December 2, 2015:   Bayoumi, Moustafa. (Selections from) How Does it Feel to Be a Problem?
