MCC Students Honored for National, Regional Academic Achievement

<"https://www.ptk.org/"> Phi Theta Kappa international honor society has named MCC student Carolyn Spencer one of the top community college students in the nation. Spencer (Webster) has been selected as a member of its 2011 All-USA Community College Academic Team. Only 20 students from more than 1,600 nominations representing more than 800 community colleges were selected for this national honor, based on academic achievement, leadership accomplishments and community service involvement. A $2,500 scholarship and a medallion were presented to her at an awards ceremony in New Orleans, La., on Monday, April 11.

As a member of the All-USA team, Spencer was automatically named to the All-New York Academic Team. In addition, as the top scorer from New York State in the program, she was named Coca-Cola New Century Scholar and received a $2,000 scholarship and plaque from The Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. An active student leader, Spencer, 20, will graduate from MCC this spring with an associate degree in business administration. She plans to transfer to Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall.

In addition to Spencer, MCC student, Lindsay WIlliams (Penfield), and MCC alumnus Josiah Harris (Rochester), have been named to its All-New York Academic Team. As first-team members, Spencer and Williams, a health information technology major, have been selected 2011 Coca-Cola Gold Scholars and will each receive a $1,500 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation in addition to full-tuition scholarships to attend a participating State University of New York institution for the next two years. Harris, a Keuka College student, who earned an associate degree in criminal justice from MCC in December 2010, has been named to the third team. All honorees received a medallion. Selection as a Coca-Cola Scholar was based on scores earned in academic achievement, leadership skills and community service involvement in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition.
