Student Incident, Use of NY Alert

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, four MCC students were involved in an altercation on the Brighton Campus in Building 11. Two students received stab wounds. They were treated at the scene and transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. Their injuries are not considered life threatening.

MCC Public Safety officers responded and apprehended two suspects immediately. The suspects are in the custody of the Brighton Police Department, which is leading the investigation.

You may be wondering why the SUNY NY-ALERT system was not activated. The SUNY NY-ALERT system is designed to be used when there is an ongoing or continuing threat to people or property. In today’s incident, the suspects were apprehended immediately by MCC’s Public Safety Department and taken into custody by the Brighton Police Department. The incident was over quickly; the college community was not in immediate danger.

As is our practice, we regularly review our safety response and notification procedures, and certainly will do so in the coming days.

As always, our primary concern is the health and safety of the MCC community. If you have any information related to this incident, please contact MCC Public Safety at ext. 2911.
