Nearly all students in Rochester City School District’s fifth-grade classes at School #2 who were tutored by MCC service-learning students met or exceeded standards on their state Social Studies exam. Definitely a job well done!
Teacher Najmah Abdulmateen from School #2, which has been listed by the state as an underachieving school, recently shared her great news in an e-mail with Service-Learning Coordinator Susan Bender and Assistant Professor Janet Waasdorp, whose EDU 200 students last semester did the tutoring as part of their service-learning course.
Najmah wrote: “Your students worked in our 5th grades last semester and support them in their Social Studies classes………They took the NYS 5th grade Social Studies exam in November and 91% of them met or exceeded standards…43 out of 47 students passed the exam…Last year 60% met or exceeded standards……..Let’s talk about how many tutors there will be (during this spring semester) and how we can use them……..”
Their success was part of a recent article in the “Democrat and Chronicle;” see attached PDF.
Kudos go to Janet, Susan, the EDU students who tutored and, of course, the fifth graders who mastered Social Studies!
