MCC Data Champions complete six-month training

President Burt-Nanna has signaled the importance of data-informed decision-making at the college, and to that end, Academic Services and Institutional Research collaborated on the Data Champions employee development program.   This program was designed to empower staff to report, visualize, and present college data, allowing Institutional Research to increase their focus on higher level analysis.

At the end of 2021, each Vice President designated Data Champions for their area based on their experience and expertise with various types of institutional data. By designating their specific area(s) of expertise, each Data Champion has been able to hone their skills in accessing and analyzing the type of data most relevant to their role.  The Data Champions participated in asynchronous and hands-on training to support general data literacy and research question design as well as the use of Tableau, Argos, Civitas, SUNY Business Intelligence, and the Post-Secondary Data Partnership through the National Student Clearinghouse.  Going forward, when members of the college community need data to inform decision making, they can now go directly to the Data Champion with the appropriate expertise. That Data Champion will be able to pull reports, design dashboards, and access any needed data within their designated area.

This project expanded the data capacity of the college in partnership with Institutional Research by developing staff who can serve as data experts on committees within their area of focus.  Additionally, the project has created a community of practice among the Data Champions, allowing for greater transparency and information sharing across areas. The planning team also created an online course for the use of others who the Vice Presidents may designate for this training in the future.

Data Champions will share the dashboards they created with stakeholders, create new dashboards on request of divisional leadership, and help their divisions craft additional research questions.  The group will also collaborate on templates and practices that will guide future data work at the college including divisional data literacy opportunities.

This was a significant undertaking and I want to thank the planning team and all the data champions for committing to this important work.
