TCC: Today! Building connections with students at 2 pm

Please join the TCC for a conversation about how to connect with students in the remote environment.

Building connections with students facilitated by April Daniels - Wednesday, 6/3, 2-3 pm

During the spring semester, April experimented with several methods to keep her students coming to class. She is especially skilled at building strong connections with students. Learn what she did and discuss how you might implement similar strategies while teaching remotely. We highlighted these examples from April's class in mid-April:

When holding my Zoom classes, I emphasize very heavily, especially during the first part of class, the affective learning domain. I pose questions via the chat feature, and they can either respond to the group or privately to me, and then we discuss how we're doing. There have been a lot of tears, but there has been levity as well, and I get a lot of emails from students saying how much they appreciate that shared experience.

In addition to zoom facilitation, I have also made videos, that are not instructional, but rather, at the risk of sounding cliche, motivational. I infuse humor, I dress up in wacky stuff, and I close with a poem. I have gotten a lot of heartfelt feedback on how much that cheered them and made them want to keep checking their email for more. These are only roughly 5 minutes long.
