Yo Ho Ho and a CL Designation! Join the Fleet of High Impact Learnin' at MCC!
Arrr, ye savvy educators of Monroe Community College, lend me yer ears! Be ye usin’ active and collaborative learnin’ in the courses ye be teachin’? If aye, then hoist the Jolly Roger and consider gettin’ yer course marked as a Collaborative Learnin’ (CL) course!
Why set yer sights on a CL designation, ye ask?
Collaborative Learnin’ (CL) be a High Impact Practice here at MCC, crossin' the seven seas of every discipline—be it classroom, lab, studio, or out in the field. CL-designated courses be creatin’ lively learnin’ ports where students and professors come together, sharin’ the skills, lingo, and ways of the discipline through teamwork and hearty engagement. The aim? To teach ye scallywags how to tackle problems as part of a group of dependin’ shipmates and to sharpen yer own knowledge by takin’ in the words of others—especially those with tales and backgrounds different from yer own.
The CL flag tells all ye that the course be filled with activities where cooperation and learnin’ be the heart of the adventure. The purpose of this mark be to build a culture where students of all stripes band together, findin’ solutions and craftin’ creations that be worth their weight in gold for the discipline at hand.
What be the requirements, ye wonder?
There be no set rules on how ye captains of the classroom achieve this goal, nor does a CL designation demand any particular assignments. The way ye steer the ship with yer teachin’ methods be entirely up to ye and yer department, as long as Collaborative Learnin’ takes up at least 30% of the class time or coursework and counts fer at least 10% of the final booty—er, grade.
If ye be interested in flyin’ the CL colors for yer course or have more questions, reach out to Ryan Clemens (rclemens@monroecc.edu), Chemistry and Geosciences. Set yer course for Collaborative Learnin’, mates, and let’s make the classroom a treasure trove of shared knowledge! Arrr!
Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!
