MCC Proud: Meet Rebecca Mack

Transfer Counselor Rebecca Mack has worked at Monroe Community College (MCC) for 26 years, originally starting at the Damon City Campus. In her current role, she helps MCC students transfer to 4-year degree granting colleges or universities.

“I assist students in college and major exploration, course selection, and the application process,” she said. “We discuss what steps to take to be a competitive applicant, especially for highly selective institutions.”

In addition to updating the Transfer Pathway Advising Guides and other resources found on the MCC website, Mack works closely with MCC’s partner 4-year college representatives (who frequently visit the MCC campuses). Recently, she also worked with a team of Phi Theta Kappa officers on a transfer planning course which went live on the MCC Student Brightspace platform in December.

She will soon be serving on the new SUNY Student Transfer Services sub-committee as they begin to implement recommendations from the SUNY Transfer Task Force.

Mack got involved in this line of work after meeting Donna Burke in the MCC Admissions Office. “Having always been interested in education and counseling, I immediately became compelled to be part of this community after seeing her enthusiasm for students,” she said.

Originally, Mack was hired to help students on public assistance earn their MCC degree or certificate while still maintaining their benefits. The grant program allowed students to get the support they needed to be successful in college (ex. child care, transportation, etc.).

“There I truly witnessed the transformative power of education and of MCC,” she added.

Mack later moved into a Career Counselor position where she found her passion for transfer planning and hasn’t looked back.

During her time at MCC, Mack has been honored with several awards, including the New York State Transfer & Articulation Association (NYSTAA) Distinguished Service Award, the NYSTAA President’s Award, and the MCC Champion Award (given by students).

Looking back on her twenty-six years at MCC, Mack recalls several memorable moments – including working with Cornell University on a Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Grant where she learned what they look for in applicants.

“After visiting campus, students could really see themselves there,” said Mack. “Many MCC students transferred to and graduated from Cornell.”

Last year, Mack was interviewed for an article at Cornell University where two MCC transfer students were also featured. In fact, she was contacted by an out-of-state parent about having his daughter attend MCC after viewing the article online.

When asked what advice she’d give current MCC students, Mack offered, “If you plan to earn a bachelor’s degree: Ask questions. Talk to the 4-year college. Don’t assume. Do your research. When you understand how the transfer process works, it is less scary and you can prepare for a smooth transition.”

Mack attended the University of Rochester for her BA in Psychology and Health & Society. She went on to the University at Buffalo for her Master of Social Work.
