Email update

Exchange 2010 Migration During Christmas Break Week

Communications and Network Services personnel will be performing a college-wide migration of our email system to Exchange 2010 between December 28, 2010 and December 31, 2010.  During this time, users may experience intermittent email service interruptions (particularly to mobile devices connected via ActiveSync) while the system is being transitioned. We anticipate that all services will be fully functional by Friday, December 31 2010.

Online Mailbox Migration
Unlike previous migrations, moving your mailbox from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 is a relatively painless, unobtrusive process that can be performed “online” while you have Outlook open and are actively using your email.  During the migration process, your mailbox will remain functional, and once completed, you may be prompted to close and re-start Outlook. Once you re-open, your mailbox should be live on the new system.  Mailbox migrations are scheduled to begin on 12/28/2010 and will continue throughout the entire week.

Outlook Web App (Formerly Outlook Web Access - OWA) URL Change
Following migration, users will still be able to use the MyMCC Portal (https://mymcc.monroecc.edu) and the E-Mail button to connect to Outlook Web App to view their mail from off campus.  Users who directly connect to OWA will need to use the following URL: https://mymail.monroecc.edu.  Note that the https:// prefix is now required to ensure a secure connection is made to the system.

Spam Filtering Changes
Monroe Community College will now utilize Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE) as our primary mechanism for protecting users from unsolicited junk email (spam). The overwhelming majority of all email received by the college is classified as spam (approximately 85%), and as such, we must keep the system useful and functional by aggressively filtering these messages before they reach user inboxes.

Previously, Monroe Community College utilized a stand-alone SonicWALL email filtering appliance to perform spam filtering, which quarantined suspected junk messages for users to inspect at https://spam.monroecc.edu.  This website will no longer be in service following our Christmas Break 2010 migration to Exchange 2010, and future questionable messages will be delivered directly to users’ Junk E-mail folders within Outlook and Outlook Web App (OWA).  Messages in the Junk E-mail folder will be automatically purged after 14 days.
