Power change-over this Saturday (8/27) to affect buildings 1, 5, 6, and 7 and campus wide air conditioning

This Saturday we will complete the final parts of the summer phase of the power upgrade project for the buildings on the west side of the campus. This project involves the replacement of 1963 vintage electrical gear and wiring and will provide a higher capacity and better reliability going forward.

The power in building 5 is being interrupted to complete the work that was started last March. A technical problem necessitated some re-engineering and a change order to the contractor. This delayed the final upgrading of the power to the fifth floor. At the same time we are moving the panel box on the floor to a more accessible location in the hallway. This work is expected to take most of the day, from 7 am to 5 pm. The power will be off to the entire building for a short time, and then only to the fifth floor for the duration.

The power in buildings 1, 6, and 7 will be interrupted from 7 am to approximately 2 pm to remove the temporary generator and connect the new substation electrical equipment. Since this substation also provides power to the cogen plant and our chiller plant, both will be off line during this period. As soon as the wiring is switched over to the new electrical equipment, campus services will be restored. The remainder of campus will be supplied power from R. G. & E. during this outage.

In buildings 1, 5, 6, and 7 it is a good idea to turn off the power to electrical devices - especially computers, before you leave Friday. Although the risk is slight of equipment being damaged by the ups and downs of the power, the risk is zero if the equipment is off.

Coming this Christmas: New equipment in Building 3……….
