New Youth Sports Coaching Certification Program

In association with the SUNY Youth Sports Institute, MCC’s Health and Physical Education Department now offers youth sports coaches an opportunity to obtain coaching certification through a one-time, three-hour course taught by MCC faculty. The program is also open to parents, administrators and officials involved in youth sports (non-school, youth sports programs involving children ages 12 and under).

Beginning in the Spring 2009 semester, the program will also be offered for college credit within MCC’s health and physical education curriculum (course title: Selected Certifications in Youth Sports/PPE 188).

The training and certification program is delivered in easy-to-understand modules and addresses how coaches can be effective communicators while helping players develop good sportsmanship, character, and physical abilities. Coaches who successfully complete the course receive a “Youth Sports NY Certified Coach” identification badge, access to online resources and an optional coaching liability insurance policy. The certification also encourages coaches to explore best practices with colleagues across New York state.

Course scheduling is flexible, and sessions can be arranged for groups of 15 or more at MCC or at locations within specific communities. The program costs $20 per person. Interested persons are encouraged to contact Professor Liz Kelly, Ed.D., Health and Physical Education, at x2854 or <<mailto:ekelly@monroecc.edu>> to register.

The SUNY Youth Sports Institute was established in Cortland, N.Y. to develop common minimum standards for coaches and help them realize the human development benefits youth sports offers. For more information, please visit <<https://www.youthsportsny.org>>.
