African-American Theatre Workshop: TODAY!

The Sixth Act and MCC’s Black Student Union’s “African-American Theatre: An Academic Workshop” is TODAY, Tuesday, February 24, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in the Black Box Theater. As usual, the workshop is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served, and metered parking is available.

Focusing on the work of Willis Richardson, the premiere playwright of the Harlem Renaissance and the first black playwright to produce a non-musical on Broadway, this workshop will invite participants to explore challenges and achievements specific to the development of African-American theatre in the United States. We will take a brief historic look at Richardson’s role in developing the “Black Stage Reality” of the Harlem Renaissance, study a scene from his most famous play, and then investigate the larger and more contemporary implications of “performing blackness” both off and on the stage.

We’ll look forward to seeing you at this important and provocative workshop.
