Meet Theresa Lou Bowick, BSN, RN '01, MCC Alumni Hall of Fame Inductee

The Monroe Community College Foundation invites you to celebrate the success of the four outstanding alumni who will be inducted into the MCC Alumni Hall of Fame during the Salute to Excellence dinner, Thursday evening, November 13 at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

Alumna Theresa Lou Bowick, BSN, RN, ’01 is a registered nurse who inspires our community to be healthier. She was nominated by alumna Gloria Langston ’74 (WDKX) who is also a hall of fame member. Following is a piece of Theresa’s inspiring story:

Theresa is a native Rochesterian who loves being a registered nurse and serving the health care needs of adults with developmental disabilities.  Her accomplishments include being a published author and promoting health and wellness as a local radio personality.

After graduating from East High School, Theresa earned her associate in applied science degree in nursing from MCC followed by a bachelor of science degree in nursing from The College at Brockport. Her MCC experience prepared her for Brockport’s RN-to-BSN Fast-Track Nursing program where she became the first African-American female to earn the President’s Award, the highest honor for a graduating senior at the college.

Theresa’s creativity, leadership and volunteerism have earned national recognition from the White House and Capitol Hill. Her radio segment, “Health Beats” airs every Tuesday morning on WDKX where she leads discussions on health care issues. She published her personal memoir, Collard Green Curves-a Fat Girl’s Journey from Childhood Obesity to Healthy Living in 2013 that inspires people to conquer their fears and pursue new beginnings. She gives back as a member of the American Nurses Association and by speaking at special events at MCC.

Funds raised at the Salute to Excellence support student scholarships and educational innovation at MCC. The event reception will begin at 5:30 p.m.; the dinner and award ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for faculty and staff are once again available for $50 and can be purchased through the Foundation office at x1500 or <mailto:mccf@monroecc.edu>.
