Strategies of Human Mating, Diversity & Universality Across Cultures
Friday, April 30, 2010
3:30 p.m.
MCC Theatre

Dr. David Buss is one of the world’s most widely cited psychologists.  He has conducted research on strategies of human mating, sexual jealousy, motivation and conflict between the sexes.

Dr. Buss theorizes that humans have a menu of mating strategies. The key to understanding mating strategies centers on identifying what women and men want. In this talk Dr. Buss will present the key results of a study of 37 cultures (from Australia to Zambia) located on six continents and five islands. Cultures differ greatly in their mate preferences for some qualities (e.g., physical appearance, virginity), yet show striking similarity in their mate preferences for other qualities (e.g., kindness). Knowledge of these shared and divergent mate preferences across cultures provides insight into many other aspects of human mating—tactics of mate attraction, tactics of mate retention, sexual jealousy and sexual conflict. His talk will present a unified theory of human mating strategies that includes both evolved and culturally diverse elements.

Dr. Buss has authored more than 300 scientific papers and six books, including:
The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating
Personality: Domains of Knowledge About Human Nature
The Murder Next Door:  Why the Mind is Designed to Kill
The Dangerous Passion: Why Jealousy is as Necessary as Love and Sex
