Middle States: Did You Know...?
MCC is in the process of achieving reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Led by Community College of Allegheny County President Dr. Quintin Bullock (formerly DCC executive dean), evaluation team members will visit MCC March 13-16 to follow up on MCC’s self-study report and assess MCC’s compliance with accreditation standards. When the Middle States team visits, they will engage in conversations (scheduled or through chance encounters) with any number of individuals across campus about MCC. Our weekly “Did You Know” column aims to help you better understand MCC’s reaccreditation process and to become more aware of the contents of the self-study report. Did you know … 4,232 students participated in applied learning experiences last year?
MCC’s educational offerings include various opportunities for students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom. Our partners in business, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies help our students develop practical skills, apply and extend classroom knowledge, and gain valuable real-world experience. MCC offers students a variety of options to do so, including, but not limited to co-ops, field experiences, clinicals, and service learning. In spring 2015 alone, 1226 students combined civic engagement with academic coursework to the benefit of the community and the students. This is just one example of the many ways MCC engages students and prepares them for academic and future success.

Did you know ... a new outcomes based model of General Education has been approved by Faculty Senate?
The current MCC General Education Program (MCC-GER), which has been in place since 2005, was designed to meet both local MCC general education requirements and those established by the State University of New York (SUNY-GER) in 2000. Local requirements were crafted to be consistent with SUNY-GER allowing AAS programs to begin to lay a general education foundation consistent with the one required by the AA and AS degrees. While MCC-GER has served students well over the past ten years, the Re-Imagine, Re-Invent, Re-Engineer General Education committee recommended a new, outcomes-based model which was approved by Faculty Senate in May 2015. The model has been reviewed by the Provost and is currently being considered for adoption or further refinement. The Provost has charged the MCC General Education Implementation Team with finalizing a list of learning outcomes that will serve as the foundation of the College’s local general education program and a subset of those outcomes that will serve as its Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs).
