Food of the Month - Apples

As part of MCC’s Wellness Council we will be bringing you healthy eating ideas. Each month we will focus on a specific food and its nutritional benefits. We will also provide links with more information about each food as well. The October food of the month is apples!

Do you know how many apple growers there are in New York State? Do you know how many bushels of apples one apple tree can produce?

According to
NY Apple Country, there are over 700 apple growers in New York State growing over 20 different varieties. On average, in one year they harvest over 27 million bushels of apples from more than 10 million trees. This amount could make over 85 million gallons of apple cider or 500 million apple pies!

Apples, like most fresh fruit, have great nutritional value. They are an excellent source of dietary fiber and potassium and contain no fat, sodium, or cholesterol. Apples are also a great way to clean teeth and kill bacteria between brushings.

And speaking of apple cider, check out its medical benefits on
WebMD. Long thought of as a folk remedy, it is being studied relative to weight loss and blood sugar control. It probably won’t make you skinny but its anti-glycemic effect is well documented. Always dilute it when drinking it for health purposes as its high acidic level can erode your tooth enamel.

We hope you enjoy the attached recipes this month.
