Upward Bound Summer Program in Full Swing

The MCC Upward Bound summer program began on June 27th. You may have already spotted Upward Bound students wearing blue shirts with “Resiliency” written on the back. Resiliency is our theme for the summer, and further served as the focus for our two-week orientation.  Students learned to respect, encourage and complement others, as well as other concepts aligned with the core value of resiliency.

During these orientation activities, students from Upward Bound delivered hand-made cards to seniors at Lifespan as part of an introduction to community service. They also visited the Islamic Center of Rochester along with GCC Upward Bound for Diversity Day, learning about different cultures, traditions and religions. Upward Bound has been pleased to have a number of guest speakers from various community agencies visit our students, including representatives from AmeriCorps, the Animal Emergency Service/Veterinary Specialists of Rochester, and the Rochester Eye and Tissue Bank.

Classes for the Upward Bound summer program began on Monday, July 11th, and resiliency remains an important tenet of Upward Bound. Upperclassmen are taking an ACT prep course, while freshmen are taking classes in writing and reading skills, math and science. Expect to see plenty of bright blue shirts in the halls of the Damon City Campus until Upward Bound’s summer program comes to a close on July 29th.
