Donors Break Record, Raise $100K for Student Scholarships

Monroe Community College Foundation Chair John T. Smith ’71 said “We changed the world tonight for MCC students,” as he announced that guests of the 12th annual Gold Star Gala presented by M&T Bank netted $100,000 for student scholarships and program innovation at Monroe Community College. The net total shattered previous MCC Foundation event-giving records. Eleven named scholarships, including five two-year scholarships, were established at the gala, held May 22 at the Country Club of Rochester.

“The Magical Mystery Tour” gala featured a Beatles-theme with live music, gourmet British cuisine, and silent and live auctions. Guests donned 1960s attire, including auctioneer Howie Jacobson, managing partner, Dixon Schwabl, who wore an original jacket that was a gift to him from Ringo Starr. The event marked the fifth consecutive year for M&T Bank as title underwriter. Gold Record Sponsors included The DiMarco Group, Dixon Schwabl and Eastman Kodak Co.

Gala Honorary Chair Lori Van Dusen, managing director, Convergent Wealth Advisors, said “When you support the MCC Foundation, you support the future of our community.” Van Dusen and her husband, Ron Boillat, served as honorary chairs; Melanie and Jeremy Wolk chaired the event planning committee.

Live auction prizes included a “Big Apple Getaway for Two,” including tickets to the “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Las Vegas VIP Escape” at The Mirage and tickets to the upcoming Ringo Starr concert at CMAC.
