In 1987, U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed legislation establishing the third week in November as Geography Awareness Week (GAW). Every year since then, the National Geographic Society has promoted the importance of geography to the public and to schools throughout the United States and in Canada during Geography Awareness Week.
This year, the Monroe Community College Geosciences Department promoted Geography Awareness Week with an online quiz that challenged participants in physical, human and political geography (see attached document below). Winners received their prizes from the Geosciences Assistant Professor, Michael Boester (far left), and instructor Yenal Kucuker (far right). Winners from left to right; Adam McAllister (3rd place), Mathematics faculty Patricia Burgess, Registration and Records Linda Ziegler. Front row, left to right; Enrollment Management Robyn Federman, Michelle Costanzo (1st place), and Noah Isaacs (2nd place). 45 people took the quiz and the average score was 11 out of 20.
