To celebrate the upcoming commencement on May 29, we are featuring profiles of some of the extraordinary and inspiring members of the class of 2025. Although this is only a small sample size of all the incredible graduates this year, we hope that it gives everyone a chance to see through the eyes of students how valuable of an experience it is to attend MCC. Today’s profiles feature Billy Simba and Elisabeth Small. #MCC2025 #MCCPROUD

Billy Simba

Veronica: Where are you from?
Billy: I was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. My family and I fled to Nairobi, Kenya when war broke out when I was a baby, and we were registered as refugees by the UNHCR Refugee Agency in Nairobi. I grew up in Nairobi until I was resettled to the United States in 2016.

Veronica: What is your major?
Billy:  I am pursuing an Associate in Science degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences with a General Studies focus at Monroe Community College.

Veronica: Who inspires you and why?
Billy: My family inspires me. Their resilience and determination in the face of immense challenges have taught me the importance of perseverance and hope. They are a constant reminder of the strength of the human spirit. Also, the people I have met in the refugee communities, and the people who work to help them, are a constant source of inspiration as well.

Veronica: What are your plans after graduation?
Billy: I am excited to be transferring to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in the fall of 2025. I plan to major in International and Global Studies, with a focus on International Relations. I am also considering a minor in either Humanities, Computing, and Design, or Cybersecurity to enhance my education and career prospects further.

Veronica: What was your favorite memory from your time at MCC?
Billy: My favorite memories revolve around my involvement in the Student Government Association (SGA). I especially cherish the collaborative efforts with other student clubs and organizations. Working on events like the 9/11 commemoration event, Adoptee Awareness Panel Event, Women in Leadership Panel event, October 7 ceasefire event, the Ukraine Event, and my work with the COS presentations, has been incredibly rewarding.

Veronica: Why would you recommend MCC to other students?
Billy: I would highly recommend MCC for its supportive community, diverse opportunities, and commitment to student success. The college provides a strong academic foundation, encouraging personal growth and community involvement. The faculty and staff are dedicated to helping students achieve their goals, and the diverse student body creates a rich and inclusive learning environment. My own experience, from academic exploration to SGA involvement, has been incredibly positive.

Veronica: What advice would you give to prospective students you wish someone would have given to you?
Billy: I would advise prospective students to get involved in the college community beyond academics. Join clubs, attend events, and take advantage of the resources available. Building connections and exploring different interests will enrich your college experience and open doors to new opportunities. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help and seek out mentors. Your time at MCC is a great opportunity to explore and grow.

Elisabeth Small

Veronica: Where are you from?
Elisabeth: Rochester, NY

Veronica: What is your major?
Elisabeth: English

Veronica: What inspires you and why?
Elisabeth: The ability to feel because my best work is the work that moves me.

Veronica: What are your plans after graduation?
Elisabeth: Attend SUNY Geneseo to major in English and minor in Creative Writing and Education

Veronica: What was your favorite memory from your time at MCC?
Elisabeth: Either presenting at Scholars' Day or organizing and speaking at the Adoptee Awareness Month Panel Discussion and Dinner. It was truly amazing to share the causes I care about and help illuminate and highlight diverse groups to the MCC community.

Veronica: Why would you recommend MCC to other students?
Elisabeth: As an adult returning student, I was nervous about feeling out of place. The diversity of MCC allowed me to make MCC my second home. I have grown more into myself having attended MCC and engaging with its community.

Veronica: What advice would you give to prospective students you wish someone would have given to you?
Elisabeth: Join clubs and meet people! The community of friends and leadership experience gave me the full college experience and skills needed for the future. Silver linings are everywhere. Even the toughest situations have a silver lining and may even lead you to a better journey you couldn't have imagined. Don't give up. You deserve it.
