Fall NYSMATYC Mathematics Contest

Encourage your students to participate in the Fall 2007 Mathematics Contest of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC).  The contest will be held on a “drop-in” basis in the R.A.F. Mathematics Learning Center, 11-204, during the week of October 22 through October 26.  The test takes up to 60 minutes.

Any student currently enrolled at MCC (full or part time) who has not taken mathematics courses above the community college level is eligible to participate.  The problems are designed for students at the pre-calculus level or above.

The hours for the Math Learning Center are Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m.– 9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. (the test will not be administered during the Saturday hours).  Please note that the number of spaces available for test taking is limited, and students will be allowed to take the contest on a first come, first served basis.  Students wishing to take the contest are strongly encouraged NOT to wait until the end of the week.

Students who take the contest are given extra consideration when applying for NYSMATYC scholarships.  There are also trophies, prizes, awards, and recognition given to the top scorers.

For a sneak preview of what to expect in the test, there are old contest exams available for your review at the desk in 11-204 during the week of the contest.

Also, save the date for a similar contest from the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) held at one time only, Friday, November 2 from 11:55 a.m.– 12:55 p.m. in 8-300.  The grand prize for this contest is a $3,000 scholarship to any accredited four-year institution.
