President's Wednesday Message

In honor of Halloween, I wanted to share a treat.  A couple weeks back, I visited the Hobart and William Smith Colleges at the invitation of their president, Mark Gearan.  While there, I had the good fortune of meeting with the Dean of William Smith College, Dr. Cerri Banks—who just happens to be an alumna of MCC, specifically the Damon City Campus.  She began at DCC as a non-traditional student in age and background and spoke glowingly of how supported she felt within the Damon community of learners.  Her preparation at MCC led her to Syracuse University, where she completed her bachelor of science, master’s, and doctoral degrees.  Cerri’s affection for MCC warmed the whole room on that chilly and rainy afternoon, and her story is my treat today.

Each of us knows many Cerris: in fact, our trick-or-treat pumpkins are likely overflowing with them.  Students who started—some uncertainly, some with great drive—at MCC; students whose success can be traced back to the knowledge and confidence they found here . . . with and because of you.  For each plaque in our Alumni Hall of Fame, there could be hundreds.

So, in the spirit of Halloween, I ask that you share a (calorie-free) treat . . . an MCC success story.  You can share the story with me (via email or the blog), with a colleague, with College and Community Relations, with the alumni folks at the Foundation, or with a friend or neighbor.  If you’re like me, as you tell the story, you’ll realize that you’re the one getting the real treat—a moment to pause and reflect on the life changing work we do each day.

Happy trick or treat!
