MCC Nursing Student Serves as Honor Flight Guardian to WWII Veteran Assisted by the Generosity of the MCC Community

With the financial support of the MCC Community, who raised $1,400.00 for Honor Flight Rochester, MCC Nursing Student Kirk Nelson proudly served as guardian to Robert Abbott, a WWII veteran, on Mission 24 (September 8th and 9th).

Without the assistance of Kirk, Mr. Abbott would have been unable to participate in this experience. This was Mr. Abbot’s first trip to Washington. Kirk recounts “To see Bob and the 45 other veterans walk out on the WWII memorial is something that I will never forget.  Some were smiling the entire time.  Others were in tears.  One common thing you could sense in all of them was pride.  Although they are very proud of what they did, I would suspect that not one of them would refer to themselves as the hero’s we call them.  If you ask them, they were just doing their jobs.”

A highlight of the trip for both Mr. Abbot and Kirk was a surprise visit from Mr. Abbott’s grandson, a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Navy who serves as a Combat Squadron Commander.  MCC Nursing is proud of Kirk’s willingness to volunteer his time and nursing skill set while juggling his last semester of school amongst work and family obligations.
