February Programs at Your Teaching & Creativity Center

The Teaching & Creativity Center’s theme for 2014-15 is “Challenge Yourself, Challenge Your Students.”  With new challenges we re-energize ourselves, inspire our students and reinvigorate our teaching.  The TCC can help you learn a new skill, redesign a lesson, or implement an innovative technique.

This month we’ll be offering 6 dynamic programs at Brighton and DCC.  Full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and professional staff are invited to join us.

Crossing Cultural Barriers/Military Culture (Tuesday, February 3rd; 5-6:30pm, Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Monroe B) at Brighton) – Adjunct Faculty Supper for Success -- RSVP: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/adjfaculty-feb3

College personnel may have a significant cultural gap to close with veterans on campus, especially for those who have not served in the armed forces. This workshop provides general information regarding military culture and the types of experiences student-veterans had while in uniform. Special emphasis is placed on the distinct differences between military and academic cultures.  Co-facilitated by Eric Wheeler (Counseling & Veteran Services) and Holly Wheeler (English/Philosophy).

Responding to Common Classroom Issues (Wednesday, February 4th; 12-12:50pm, Brighton TCC – 12-201)
Let's discover and discuss classroom management options through the use of case studies.  Eileen Morris (ESOL-TRS), Holly Wheeler (English), and Bert Gamory (Physics) will be on hand to share their favorite techniques.

Helping Students Become Self-Directed Learners (Wednesday, February 4th, 12-12:50pm, DCC TCC – 5091)
Please join Beth Wilson (Psychology) for a conversation about how we can motivate our students to be more autonomous active learners. We will discuss strategies that can be used at any point in the semester.

Blackboard Tips & Tricks (Wednesday, February 11th, 12-12:50pm, Brighton TCC– 12-201)
Now that you are familiar with Blackboard, what are the tricks that would make your life easier?  Let faculty members and Instructional Technologies colleagues help you take your skills to the next level.

Civility: Fostering, Responding, and Reacting – In and Out of the Classroom (Wednesday, February 25th, 2-2:50pm, Brighton TCC – 12-201)
When faculty members experience incidents with disgruntled or threatening students in violation of the College’s Civility Policy, whether minor or egregious, maintaining a positive outlook while meeting the day-to-day obligations of an instructor and going through the various processes in response and reaction to such incidents, can be a balancing act, to say the least.   Where can faculty go to talk about such experiences, use past experiences to foster a community of respect and protection, or share practices of how to respond and react when students behave uncivilly?  Let’s find out together. Facilitated by Yulanda McKinney (English).

Managing Stress In and Out of the Classroom (Wednesday, February 25th, 12-12:50pm, DCC Dance Studio -- 5267)
How we manage the stress of our work affects our interactions in and out of the classroom. Challenge yourself to proactively relieve stress by joining Michael Britton (HED/PEC) for an introduction to the tools we can use to recognize and manage our stress, thus enhancing our teaching both in the moment and through the end of the semester. This event will be in the dance/fitness studio so that we can practice some techniques. No need to change clothes for this—we can address the stress in our lives without changing into workout clothes!
