Monroe Routs Genesee

A pair of quick starts helped the Monroe men's and women's basketball teams earn victories over their counterparts from Genesee Community College Tuesday night at MCC.

The Lady Tribunes raced to a 31-14 lead to open the first half against the Cougars, capped by a four-point play by sophomore Maurita Reid.  When the first 20 minutes were in the books, MCC led 50-30 and Reid had torched GCC for 25 points.

It was more of the same in the second half, as Monroe went on a 21-2 run in the opening minutes on its way to a 92-45 victory.  Reid finished the game with 33 points and also added 10 steals and 10 rebounds for her second triple-double of the season.

It was a playoff-type atmosphere when the men hit the floor in what was expected to be a competitive game.  But the Tribune men came out on fire, scoring the game's first 17 points on their way to a 100-64 rout of the Thruway rival Cougars.

Sherod Harris led six players in double figures with 18 points.  Joe Mbang added 14 points and 12 rebounds and Joe Lindsey dished out 12 assists to go with his dozen points.

The MCC women are now 14-1 on the season, while the men improve to 15-3.  Both teams are 4-0 in the Western New York Athletic Conference.
