Important Commencement Information for Faculty and Professional Staff

Greetings faculty and staff,

As the deadline to secure regalia for this year's commencement ceremony approaches (extended to April 12 from the original April 7), I wanted to take this opportunity to reinforce the importance of participation in the Thursday, May 25 Commencement ceremony and, of course, remind everyone of contractual obligations related to participation.

Graduation day for our students is incredibly important. Many are first-generation students receiving their first credential and many of our students have overcome tremendous obstacles to cross that stage. Commencement is that moment in time to reflect on their accomplishments and celebrate their achievements. It is not only important for them, but for their family and friends as well. Celebrating with the faculty and staff who have inspired them goes without saying.

I have participated in dozens of commencement ceremonies over the years and it is by far my absolute favorite day of the year. I am accustomed to enjoying close to 100% participation by full-time faculty and staff and will expect that here as well. My hope, though, is that attendance at commencement isn't something you do because it's an obligation or an expectation, but instead something you do for the students. I also encourage adjunct faculty and staff members who want to dress in their regalia to participate as well. It's such an amazing day. If you are interested in volunteering, there are always opportunities to get involved at that level.

For those who regularly attend, thank you. I look forward to seeing you at the arena dressed in your regalia and ready to celebrate.
