TCC: Spring Conversation #2--"Understanding the Quiet Student" on Tuesday, March 14

Join us on Tuesday, March 14, from 2:00-3:00 PM, for the second TCC Conversation of the semester: “Understanding the Quiet Student.” This is a hybrid event that will take place at the Downtown Campus (Room 404) and on Zoom.

As a former quiet student, Erin Strobl (Biology) understands some of the anxiety that arises from being a quiet learner in the classroom and trying to fit into an extroverted world. However, being quiet or introverted can be an asset! This conversation will highlight quiet MCC student voices by sharing results from an anonymous survey. The conversation's goal is to help faculty and staff understand why students are quiet and learn how to engage students' natural strengths so that everyone feels comfortable in the classroom. As Brené Brown said, “The opposite of belonging is fitting in."

For an additional perspective, you are invited to read the poem, "The Student," by Dorianne Laux. In it, the speaker learns from a student that silence is not emptiness, is not lack. Instead, "What heat it takes / for the body to blossom into speech."

All faculty and staff are welcome! Please come as you are, in-person or online. Speaking and video use during the conversation are encouraged for discussion, but not required given the nature of the topic.

Please take special note of the day, time, and location, as they might not be what you are accustomed to.

  • When: Tuesday, March 14, 2:00-3:00 PM
  • Where: Downtown Campus (Room 404) or on Zoom.
