Passing of Darvin F. Pegelow

It is with great sorrow that I inform you of the passing of Darvin F. Pegelow on March 7, at the age of 71.

Darvin was a highly respected member of MCC’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation Leadership Department from 1964-1998 where he served as a professor of health science and as the cross country coach. MCC’s Founding Athletic Director the late George C. Monagan often commented on how students and colleagues greatly benefited from Darvin’s “creativity, energy and expertise.”

Darvin was active in NYSUT and the Faculty Association. He passionately promoted wellness on campus and helped to organize the college’s Employee Assistance Program and annual health fairs.

He earned his B.S. in physical education and biology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and his master’s degree in physical education from SUNY Brockport. Prior to coming to MCC, he worked as a recreation coordinator at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Canandaigua.

Darvin is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jackie; son Todd (Jutta); daughter Tracey (Gerald) D’Amico; brother Donald; two granddaughters; nieces and a nephew.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, March 14 from 4 – 7 pm at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home (7501 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, Fairport.) A private burial will be held for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, Darvin’’s family encourages friends to “consider contributions to a charity of your choice, gather your family and friends for dinner and share memories of Darv.”
