New SUNY General Education Implementation Update

We have processed approximately 270 courses with the New Gen Ed attributes – with a potential 70 more to approve. We have 11 more weeks to approve Course Revision Proposals (6/20/23).

All Transfer programs, A.S. and A.A., have a proposal started and are at various steps in the approval process. We have 8 more weeks to approve Program Revision proposals (5/30/23). Significant effort is being made to get as many Program Revisions through various review levels so that they can be voted on at April, May and June Faculty Senate meetings.

It is clear we will not get all program revisions approved for Fall 2023. We will be creating a Catalog webpage that describes SUNY General Education, that we are transitioning to a new SUNY framework and list the programs that comply. Programs that do not make it through this year’s process will continue to meet the current SUNY General Education framework.

Transfer programs not approved for Fall 2023, as well as A.A.S. programs, will need to be processed and approved for Fall 2024.  If A.A.S. programs want to get a head start on starting a program revision, the Biotechnology A.A.S. is a helpful reference.

Implementing SUNY General Education has been impacted by four MCC specific factors; a three-month delay in getting the SUNY charge forwarded from Provost's Office to a faculty committee, Faculty Senate time to address and agree to a one framework system of Gen Ed. versus what we had - separate SUNY and MCC Gen Ed frameworks, uncoupling from Kuali curriculum processing and Catalog, and quickly developing an improved Notes based Curriculum Processing and workflow database.

Despite these factors, we have made significant progress with SUNY General Education implementation and would like to thank everyone involved in this large undertaking, including;

  • Gen Ed Implementation Committee that took up the charge
  • Curriculum proposers
  • Faculty Senate Curriculum Committee and Chair Tracey Graney
  • Those with responsibility to review an extraordinarily large volume of proposals at various levels within the approval workflow
  • Ryan Clemens and the Gen Ed review subcommittee
  • Natasha Chen and the DEI in Teaching and Learning workgroup
  • Bob Reynolds for his expertise and leadership with the new and improved Notes-based curriculum database
  • FACE advisors who will need to re-run degree audits for programs that reach Final approval - for students already registered for Fall to ensure their schedules are appropriate
  • Faculty Curriculum Liaisons Mary Jo Vest and Jann Avery
  • Lyndsey Presutti for adding Gen Ed attributes to courses at the section level of the master schedule that are approved “late”
  • Jen Kinslow for scribing numerous anticipated program updates to Degree Works and quickly becoming a valuable resource (and Marybeth Donnelly's part-time help)
  • I am particularly grateful for the professionalism and strong work ethic exhibited by Tracey Graney, Susan Hall and Margarita Medina-Perez during this demanding process and timeline

If you have any questions, please let me know.
