Mary Beth Strohm Awarded 2024 Mathematics Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award

It is with great pleasure that we announce Mary Beth Strohm as the recipient of this year’s Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. Mary Beth, a dedicated and passionate educator, has been a full adjunct professor at Monroe Community College (MCC) since 1999. Her exceptional commitment to teaching, professional development, and student engagement has made her a standout member of the MCC faculty.

Over her 26 years at MCC, she has taught a wide array of courses, ranging from Elementary Algebra to Calculus III, including specialized classes like Applied Calculus, Technical Mathematics, and Modern Business Mathematics. Her versatility and expertise have proven invaluable to both her students and colleagues.

Throughout her tenure, Mary Beth has consistently demonstrated innovative teaching methods to enhance student learning. She integrates guided notes and advanced technology, such as MyLab Math and StatCrunch, into her classes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she swiftly adapted to remote teaching, mastering Zoom and Blackboard to ensure continuity in education. Her ability to quickly learn and implement new technologies, such as OneNote, Edpuzzle, and WeBWorks, exemplifies her dedication to providing high-quality education under any circumstances.

Mary Beth's commitment to professional growth is evident through her regular participation in MCC's Teaching and Creativity Center (TCC) events, including the Adjunct Faculty Kickoff and Suppers for Success. She has also received specialized training to support students transitioning from military to civilian and academic life. Her ongoing efforts to stay current with educational technologies and teaching strategies have significantly benefited her students.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mary Beth has served as a tutor at the Mathematics Learning Center and the Damon City/Downtown campus Learning Commons, even continuing her tutoring work remotely during the pandemic. Her dedication to tutoring earned her the department’s Excellence in Tutoring Award, further highlighting her unwavering support for student success.

Mary Beth's excellence in the classroom is consistently recognized by her students and colleagues. Observations from fellow educators, such as Mike Wagner and Wadiha Haddad, have praised her rapport with students and her ability to keep them engaged and comfortable with her expectations. Student feedback frequently mentions her effective teaching methods, particularly her guided notes and review packets, which help students prepare for tests and understand complex concepts.

Former Dean Dan Robertson encapsulated Mary Beth's impact in one of his emails, stating, "The Math department has many skilled individuals, and I can think of no better example of someone who supports her students in every way that she can. We are truly fortunate to have her in our midst."

We are honored to recognize Mary Beth Strohm with the 2024 Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. Her dedication, innovation, and unwavering support for her students embody the highest standards of teaching excellence. Congratulations, Mary Beth!
