TCC: Tip of the Day - Relationships First

We are back! After a frantic week, faculty have made tremendous efforts to make coursework available to students in creative ways: synchronously on Zoom, asynchronously through Blackboard, email, and phone. In fact, we may be starting to feel comfortable with these changes. Let us remember our feelings of panic, insecurity, and anxiety as we move forward throughout the semester.

Our students are experiencing the exact same feelings...and then some.

For those of us who've been reading Bandwidth Recovery: Helping Students Recover Cognitive Resources Lost to Poverty, Racism and Social Marginalization this year, we've learned how much our students deal with on a regular basis. That is without a global pandemic. Our students' bandwidth is going to be taxed more than ever, and it is our responsibility to support them. Let's err on the side of kindness, of compassion, and of trying to see their perspective.

Over the next few weeks, please reach out to Gena and share some of the powerful moments of humanity that you have with students. These moments of grace will boost us all. We can share them anonymously. emerliss@monroecc.edu.

Peace and love, and please wash your hands.
