Passing of Dorothy Copeland, Health Services Retiree

The MCC family mourns the passing of Dorothy Copeland, a retired registered nurse in Health Services, on March 4, 2023.

She began her tenure at MCC as a graduate nurse in 1970 and was promoted to public health nurse three years later. During the early years of her MCC career, she briefly served as acting director of Health Services. In 1984, she advanced to the position of registered professional nurse.

Ms. Copeland enjoyed her work and was held in high regard by many of the MCC faculty and staff. She was valued for her knowledge and her ability to interact with people from different backgrounds. She was a dependable leader who set high standards, gave excellent care to her patients, and had a sincere interest in their problems. During a few summers, she devoted her time working as a nurse at the National Youth Sports Program on the Brighton Campus.

After 26 years of service, she retired in 1996.

Ms. Copeland received training at Genesee Hospital School of Nursing before she was selected to join Visiting Nurse Service as a public health nursing student affiliate. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing science with a minor in public health from University of Rochester and attended SUNY Geneseo.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Roy; two sons; three grandchildren; a sister; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Private services and interment were held in White Haven Memorial Park. Contributions in her memory may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607; or Visiting Nurse Services of Rochester and Monroe County, 2180 Empire Blvd., Webster, NY 14580.

Her obituary is posted on the Democrat and Chronicle’s website.

MCC extends condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. We are grateful for her many contributions and service to MCC.
